1) LEMON is the fruit of choice in digestion. The juice of half a lemon should be added to a glass of water, along with a bit of soda bicarbonate and stirred well. This should be taken in case of indigestion for instant relief.
2) GINGER(adrak) is also a well known home remedy. It stimulates the secretion of digestive juices so as to break down the heavy food. Before a heavy meal, one should eat 2 or 3 pieces of ginger, coated with a little bit of salt. This combination prevents indigestion even if one eats a bit more than usual.
3) Asafetida (Hing) is one more dependable home remedy in indigestion. A pinch of hing powder and ghee should be added to some boiled rice and mixed well. This should be eaten before the regular meal, the daily usage of which ensures proper digestion and evacuation of bowels. Dissolve a couple of small pieces of asafetida in half a cup of buttermilk and drink to aid digestion and relieve from gas.
4) The cured betel nuts are pounded and mixed with mouth fresheners and digestives like edible camphor(kapur), cardamom(elaichi) and poppy seeds(khus khus) to make the market-available betel nut powder. Usually chewed after a meal ,it clears the mouth and stomach, gives a sense of satiation and helps in digesting even the heaviest of meals.
5) The jamun fruit (black plum) is also a very powerful digestive.
6) Make a decoction of coriander (dhania) seeds and dry ginger(adrak) and consume thrice a day to stimulate digestion and relieve pain.
7) Fennel (saunph) which is used as a mouth freshener after meals is basically a digestive. Chewing a few seeds after a meal clears the food passages apart from aiding digestion.
8) The volatile oils present in nutmeg (jaiphal) are digestive and carminative and thereby a decoction of nutmeg (jaiphal) is also highly beneficial in indigestion.
9) Pepper powder mixed in butter milk is a good digestive.
10) The natural liver-protective property makes picrohiza (‘Kutaki’ in Hindi, ‘Katukarohini’ in Kannada, scientific name is ‘Picrohiza kurroa’)an ideal choice in all cases of indigestion.
11) Mix the juice of pomegranate (anar) with a tsp of honey and drink to cure conditions of indigestion especially when accompanied by giddiness.
12) The ayurvedic medicine ‘Hingvastaka churna’ is also helpful.
JUICE THERAPY:
Any of the following juices are good for digestion: ginger, papaya, pineapple, cucumber. Juice therapy is most effective when these juices are taken early in the morning on an empty stomach.
Dos and Don’ts:
1) Do not eat and drink simultaneously.
2) Do not eat in a hurry.
3) Never eat to your stomach’s full.
4) Do not eat, when there is no appetite or as a recipe for boredom.

A simple home remedy we used to follow at home during these times is eat 9 pepper corns (chew it and swallow) which could clear off any undigested food in the stomach. If the pepper corns could be wrapped up in a beetle leaf (like a beeda) its better.
Ginger and honey are also available in the form of ginger honey tonic. It is believed that this tonic or syrup is a good digestive aid due to the inherent digestive properties of ginger. Further both ginger and honey have antioxidant properties thereby increasing the immunity of the body. Therefore, consumption of one tea spoonful of ginger and honey tonic is very useful for people who have a weak digestive system.
Black pepper is remarkably beneficial for digestion. It stimulates the whole digestive system, right from the salivary glands in the mouth to the large intestine, promoting secretion of digestive juices like acids and bile into the ingested food, thereby facilitating digestion. Black Pepper can be safely used as a spice to the food of those who are on a bland diet or otherwise forbidden to have chilies (those suffering from ulcer of the mouth of the digestive system or jaundice or extreme acidity are forbidden to consume chilies)
Lavender oil is useful for digestion as it increases the mobility of the intestine. The oil also stimulates the production of gastric juices and bile and thus aids in treating indigestion, stomach pain, colic, flatulence, vomiting and diarrhea.
Fasting till the agni is proper and then giving manda, peya, vilepi till it is restored back to normal should be done. The diet should consists of old rice and light vegetable soup of spinach with warm water. Avoid all heavy and fried foods and cold drinks. Excess sweet, milk and its products which are heavy for digestion and meat of animals.
Every 3 to 4 hours drink water with 2 to 3 drops of mint essence in it. Massage your stomach with a mixture of 2 to 3 drops of garlic oil and half a cup of Soya oil. Ginger tea after meal promotes digestion. Herbal tea prepared using blackberry, raspberry, mint and camomile is effective for indigestion. Take one glass of honey and lemon juice, both mixed in equal quantity. For instant relief add some baking soda to one glass of water and drink it.
Avoid wearing tight clothes. Take at least 30 minutes walk daily. Decrease your stress level by relaxing. Do not play active sports immediately after meal. Regular exercise is good for digestive system. Eat your meals on time and chew them properly.
Avoid fast foods and processed foods. Try to eat a diet of natural whole foods such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, meats, nuts, legumes, eggs, yogurt.Eating apples can help lower stomach acid.Instead of three big meals a day, eat small, frequent meals or snacks. It takes less acid to digest smaller amounts of food and is easier on the stomach.
For quick relief, pickle juice or apple cider vinegar should get rid of your heartburn. You can drink pickle juice right from the jar undiluted. Put 1 to 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar in a glass of water and drink
For indigestion ginger tea is the best remedy. Boil your tea with a thumbnail piece of ginger. Add sugar or honey for taste. Drink this tea 3 times a day to soothe the upset organ. You can also try one teaspoon of baking soda dissolved in water
