Good things about the sun

The harmful UV rays of the sun penetrate the deeper layer of the skin cause cumulative damage over the years. The ravages are wreaked mainly on the elastic and collagen fibers that lie in the lower layer of the skin and which are responsible for its elasticity and smoothness and hence the cause for a majority of wrinkles can be blamed on the sun. Excessive exposure to UV rays can also cause brown patches of pigmentation on the face or the back of the hands, commonly called as age spots. Our eyes are also very vulnerable to the harmful UV rays and hence need to be protected with suitable eye gear while venturing out in the hot sun. So should you avoid the sun like plague? Isn’t there anything good about the sun or sunlight?

A few good things about the Sun

It makes you snooze.

LSunight helps synchronize your internal clock during the day so you sleep better at night.

It keeps your bones healthy.

When exposed to sun, our skin makes vitamin D, which Sunhelps the body absorb bone-boosting minerals like calcium.

It makes us cheery.

Even if you’re wearing shades, sunlight travels through the eye to the brain, which then releases a mood-enhancing hormone.

It brightens your smile.

Sunlight can help whiten teeth.

Sunshine gives us energy, infuses our bodies with essential vitamin D and puts us in a good mood. However, if you spend too much time in the sun you run the risk of damaging our skin with its powerful UV rays.

Tan yourself under the sun for 30 minutes daily. Great news for suntan lovers and even better news as according to Dr Wu, do not cover your body with sunblock as we all need sunlight for adequate stores of vitamin D to strengthen our immune system and for natural healing. However, restrict this to only 30 minutes daily. Vitamin D is for preventing colds, osteoporosis and certain types of cancer. Combination of Vitamin A and D can maintain sound bones and teeth and helps to build up resistance against winter’s cold.

I think a little bit of sun for you is good for you everyday due to the opportunity of absorbing for vitamin D. So sometimes going without sunscreen 24/7 is good for some people.

while it is important to apply sunscreen, it’s also good to allow your skin to absorb some sunlight each day. The body needs Vitamin D to stave off colds and infection. As far as sunscreens go, many of the ones promising to protect the skin are actually the ones causing cancer. Oxybenzone has been shown to cause cancer in studies. I use sunscreens containing mineral ingredients, such as zinc oxide and titanium dioxide.

As far as UV and vitamin D go; i remember reading that 10 minutes a day without sunscreen - exposing as much of your body as you can - is sufficient/optimal for the vitamin D requirement.
i'm thinking that even sitting with a winter coat on 'exposing' your face to the sun [in the winter] will do wonders. at least, that's my plan.

  9. 10-15 minutes of unprotected sun exposure is all you need for Vitamin D production. Any more than that and you should be wearing sunscreen.

The sun is very good for you at the proper times of the day. Early morning or later afternoon and evening is best. The midday rays are harmful due to their heat index but you get vitamin D from the sun so you do need some of it daily. Just do it between 8 and 11 am or after 4 pm and no more than an hour... 30 minutes on your back and 30 on your front or 15 as you roll a quarter turn each time.

The first positive affect of sun on your body is vitamin D with out the sun we would have to take vitamins D tablets. Because vitamin D helps us get calcium from our food and helps our muscles grow.

The benefits of sunlight cannot be denied. They include: treating and preventing heart disease, several types of cancer, tuberculosis, heart disease, flu and colds, and improving your mood. Without enough vitamin D there are risks, which include: depression, kidney and liver disease, possibly colon and other types of cancer, and softening of the bones, which could lead to osteoporosis and rickets, a disease that stunts growth.
